Editor for the Emerald book series: Community environment and disaster risk management

Emerald Group Publishing is looking to recruit a new Book Series Editor(s) to take over the editorship of Community Environment and Disaster Risk Management The series is a collection of thematic book volumes, presenting contemporary scholarship relating to global environment and approaches to disaster risk reduction. As people and communities are the first and the most important responders to disasters and environment-related problems, the series aims to analyse critical field-based mechanisms which link community, policy and governance systems. The series encourages articles with a focus on interdisciplinary, international and comparative standpoints on environment and disaster risk reduction. Coverage includes, but is not restricted to: Community-based natural resource management; Community-based environmental management; Community-based disaster risk management; Climate change adaptation; Urban risk reduction; Human security; Forest management; Coastal zone management; Post-disaster recovery experiences; and Corporate community interface on environment and disaster management.




The Role of Series Editor


The Series Editor is responsible for commissioning a pipeline of high quality, topical volumes. Each volume is typically overseen by a volume editor, and it is role of the series editor to appoint volume editors and to mentor and advise them on selection of chapters and the peer review process. Main responsibilities include:

• Soliciting high quality volumes and assisting volume editors through the editorial process


• Supporting volume editors with the peer review process


• Supplying completed manuscripts to the Publisher at Emerald, working to an agreed annual schedule


• Maintaining a strong pipeline for future volumes


• Working collaboratively with the Publisher to develop a vision for the development and strategic direction for the series.


• Promoting the series to relevant networks and at conferences to encourage authorship and dissemination

Series Editor Qualities


Emerald is seeking an individual or editorial team (co-editorship) who are / have:

• Engaged in research relevant to the coverage of the series


• Active and well networked in the DRM subject community


• Able to demonstrate previous editorial experience or a firm understanding of publishing processes and peer review


• Managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle and meet publication schedules


• Ability to engage and motivate volume editors and authors

Support from the Publisher


The appointed Series Editor will receive full training and support from a dedicated editorial team. This collaborative working practice includes:

• Working with the Series Editor to agree and assign schedules and contracts for each volume within the series.


• Assisting with Series Editor queries and implementing publishing expertise to find the best solution.


• Disseminating calls for papers to prospective contributors.


• Managing the production process from the processing of the volume manuscript through to post publication activities.


• Promoting the series to the relevant subject communities through a variety of market channels particularly conferences, association links and online campaigns.


• Realising the development and editorial vision for the series.


• Developing the commercial appeal of the series


• Developing the online visibility of the series


• An honorarium will be paid to the Series Editor which can be shared between the Series and Volume editor at their discretion. This is typically agreed on a volume by volume basis.

It is hoped that the new editor will take up post in early 2015, with a view to commissioning volumes for 2016 onwards. This will be a phased handover from the current series editor, Professor Rajib Shaw, who is planning to stand down after submitting his final volume for 2015. Professor Shaw has edited the series since it was launched in 2009 and has been instrumental in developing the series into the well respected, authoritative publication it is today.
