The GEM Foundation serves the moral and economic imperative to reduce the loss of lives and livelihoods from earthquake. GEM is a global non‐profit providing organisations and individuals with open resources to assess earthquake risk anywhere in the world. By pooling data, knowledge and people, GEM acts as an international forum for collaboration and exchange, and leverages the knowledge of leading experts for the benefit of society. Through global scientific projects, open-sources of software development, and technical as well as applied projects carried out in regions through out the globe, data, models and tools are developed and where possible applied. The GEM Foundation is governed through a public‐private partnership, featuring public institutions that represent national governments, private companies and international organisations. Guided by the needs and experiences of collaborators and citizens at large, GEM works in continuous interaction with the wider community.

GEM is seeking a Regional Project Manager to coordinate and initiate a diverse yet integrated suite of projects around the globe to grow the community of GEM collaborators, and to apply GEM resources and tools for risk management. Projects include risk assessment of major cities, hazard mapping at national and regional scale, projects aimed at data development and sharing and technology transfer / capacity. The successful candidate is an experienced project manager and will have familiarity of working in the field of disaster risk reduction. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strategic perspective and a track record of building alliances in an international context.


Responsibilities



  • Proactively identify and develop opportunities for collaboration and new regional projects, and lead coalition efforts when appropriate

  • Manage all activities required to implement proposed projects and related initiatives, including project management; organization and coordination; liaising with potential hosts or funders; facilitation among participants; detailed project management including budget planning; metrics and evaluation; and reporting and accountability.

  • Constructively coordinate with current and future GEM project managers of region-­‐specific projects

  • Constructively coordinate among GEM leadership to allocate shared technical resources to participate in regional initiatives. 

  • Contribute to GEM’s strategy for training and capacity building, together with the private and public partnerships coordinators

  • Establish a strategy and structure for the OpenQuake user community, being informed by the needs of stakeholders worldwide

  • Create and deliver materials including presentations, reports, and online content


Skills and Experience



  • Extensive experience in project management or comparable position coordinating and implementing international projects including strategy; organizing; communication; liaising with potential hosts or funders; fundraising and budget planning; facilitation among participants; detailed project management; and metrics and evaluation. 

  • Familiarity and experience with international development agendas, objectives, and processes, particularly as relates to disaster risk reduction

  • Demonstrated track record of diplomatic consensus-­building among diverse stakeholders

  • Full professional fluency of spoken and written English, with exceptional communication skills. Proficiency of a second major language is preferred.

  • Ability to juggle multiple complex projects simultaneously and effectively

  • Passion for a humanitarian mission to reduce loss of lives and livelihoods due to earthquakes

  • Availability and necessary documentation to travel internationally multiple times per year

  • Technical understanding of seismic hazard and risk assessment is preferred

  • Availability to be based at the GEM headquarters in Pavia, Italy is strongly preferred
