COP 17: Call for greater input by business and civil society

While there is no formal negotiating status for business and civil society at the UN climate change summit (COP-17) in Durban, Yannick Glemarec, head of finance and executive co-ordination at the United Nations Environmental Programme’s (UNEP’s) Global Environmental Facility, says 80% of the funds needed to deal with the effects of climate change will have to come from the private sector and households.

According to the Business Day, Mr Glemarec said the sources of the $100bn pledged last year’s UN climate change talks have not been identified. But action could not "wait for a negotiated conclusion" and success for the global south would include stronger legal adaption frameworks that addressed the needs of the rural poor, women and small-scale farmers, said Amina Mohamed, deputy executive director at UNEP. http://www.businessday.co.za/articles/Content.aspx?id=160375
