PUBLIC HEALTH AND DISASTERS

The content of the course reflects current knowledge and experiences of the management of complex disasters, complex emergencies and post-conflict situations in the health sector:

-from relief to development
-applied epidemiology of unstable situations.
-reconstruction and reform in post-conflict settings
-cross-cultural awareness
-working relations in the field


Objectives

The goal of the course is to provide a better understanding of the issues related to the health care of refugees, internally displaced persons and the affected host population in unstable situations such as natural and man-made disasters.Specific learning objectives
The participants should be able to:

-explain the determinants of unstable populations' health in developing countries and in Europe
-apply rapid assessment methods and prioritization in emergency situations and complex emergencies
-use strategic and operational planning and health management tools in unstable situations
-apply planning methods in post-conflict situations
-explain the driving forces and determinants of donor coordination
-develop a concept for disaster preparedness and development oriented Humanitarian Aid
-identify methods for quality assurance and standard setting in Humanitarian Aid.


Target Audience

The course is intended for tropEd students, health professionals from industrialized and developing countries, MDs, nurses, epidemiologists, social scientists and public health experts.

Preference may be given to candidates with work experience in developing countries. Maximum number of students (including tropEd students): 25



Admission Requirement
 


The course is held in English. Fluency in English (Reading, Speaking, Writing) required.


 


Application Procedure

Please send the mandatory registration to petersen@uni-hd.de not later than 8 weeks prior to the course and register as soon as possible as the number of participants is limited.



Tuition and Cost

The total fee for the course is € 1.200; for those enrolled in the tropEd programme € 750. A non-refundable registration fee of € 200, which will be credited towards the tuition fee, is due no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of the course.  The remaining tuition fee is due not later than 6 weeks prior to the start of the course.If the participant withdraws from the course:

-less than 6 weeks prior to the commencement, 25 % of the course fee will be charged.
-less than 4 weeks prior to the commencement, 50 % of the course fee will be charged.
-less than 2 weeks prior to the commencement, the whole course fee will be charged.

The tuition fee covers coursework and printed materials and a bi-weekly pass for the Heidelberg public transportation system, but does not include accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
