This fact sheet presents UNOPS activities in helping governments and development partners construct disaster-resistant infrastructure and increase the resilience of communities against natural disasters through the design and construction of major infrastructure projects such as schools, roads, bridges and hospitals to the highest standards, able to withstand extreme weather events. It features UNOPS commitment to adding value to the projects it supports, by developing innovative disaster risk reduction solutions drawing on the experience of its specialized engineers and project managers, focusing on sustainability, capacity development, gender empowerment and transparency at all stages of design and implementation.
It presents a set of examples illustrating UNOPS support to disaster risk reduction projects: (i) reducing the effects of violent storms in in El Salvador; (ii) improving livelihoods through disaster resilience in Afghanistan; (iii) improving urban planning and enhancing preparedness to volcanic eruptions in The Democratic Republic of the Congo; (iv) supporting the ministry of public works to develop disaster-resistant building guidelines in Haiti; (v) running disaster management programmes in Bangladesh; (vi) building earthquake-resistant schools in Indonesia; and (vii) increasing resilience to droughts in Sudan.
