The aim of the course is to enable participants to work with basic GIS tools and methodologies in preparation of disaster related maps in support of emergency response operations. The course is focused on providing insight into various tools available in GIS for situation mapping. Emphasis will be given to understand the concept of GIS and its integration in disaster situations. A central part of the course involves collecting pre and post disaster baseline data from web sources, preparing, and analysing and creating situation maps to support emergency response. Hands on experience with the field data collection tools like GPS, PDA and UAV will also be part of the course.

Many different types of professionals respond to an unfolding crisis. This course provides strategies for interlocking culture specialists with humanitarian specialists during an emergency situation and aims to unify these sometimes conflicting perspectives. The course imparts practical skills and knowledge for taking simple measures to secure and stabilize endangered cultural heritage during a complex emergency situation, which in turn can become a driver for peace and holistic development. The recovery and stabilization of such cultural material can be a strategy that allows people to cope in a crisis.

Il disaster manager, chiamato anche Emergency manager, è l’esperto di protezione civile, che predispone e verifica i piani di emergenza, fornendo consulenze e servizi di orientamento a tutti i soggetti coinvolti nel fronteggiare catastrofi naturali o causate dall’uomo. È una figura relativamente recente, che soltanto negli ultimi anni è diventata operativa nel nostro Paese, inserendosi nel sostegno al coordinamento degli interventi di protezione civile. Il disaster manager ha un elevato livello di responsabilità, in quanto supporta i processi di coordinamento delle attività di protezione civile. In particolare, la sua azione è orientata alla riduzione dei danni tramite attività di monitoraggio e controllo preventivo dei fattori di rischio presenti su uno specifico territorio. L’attività del Disaster Manager si svolge in tre momenti: prima, durante e dopo l’evento pertanto questa figura professionale deve possedere specifiche caratteristiche professionali per la gestione del rischio, e relazionali per la gestione del gruppo di lavoro.


Il corso si propone quindi di fornire tutte quelle competenze necessarie per ricoprire tale figura professionale ed inoltre prevede una specifica formazione necessaria per operare nelle unità di crisi. Inoltre il Master rappresenta un contributo utile su tematiche di fondo nella preparazione di chi si occupa di Protezione Civile.

EU Disaster Response Law in an International Context

The summer school aims at deepening the knowledge of EU action in the field of disaster management. In a vertical dimension, it will take into consideration the interaction of the EU regime and activities with other international institutions cooperating for the prevention of and response to natural and man-made disasters. The interplay between EU and national mechanisms will also be considered, in order to assess their degree of complementarity. The involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will also be taken into account for a thorough evaluation of their proper role in disaster relief and assistance activities.

In October 2015, the DFG Research Training Group “Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World” (NatRiskChange) will be established at the University of Potsdam and will be run in cooperation with the Freie Universität of Berlin, the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).  NatRiskChange aims to develop methods that improve hazard and risk analyses and quantifications based on the transient, non-stationary nature of hazards and risks in response to changing natural and anthropogenically altered components of the earth system. Key scientific aims are the development, testing and pilot application of studies on the identification, quantification and prediction of transient natural hazards and associated risks. Earthquakes, floods, and mass movements are of major research interest.

Concluso corso TAS organizzato dalla regione Molise

Lo scorso venerdi 19 giugno, si è concluso il corso TAS di 1° livello (Topografia Applicata al Soccorso) organizzato dalla Direzione Regionale del Molise, che ha visto la partecipazione di 14 discenti provenienti dai comandi di Campobasso e Isernia. I partecipanti hanno appreso le tecniche TAS proposte dagli istruttori molisani, apprezzati per la loro professionalità ed impegno. Nella giornata di giovedi si è svolta un'esercitazione regionale in ambiente, nel comune di Carpinone, in località Colle dell’Orso, durante la quale i corsisti TAS, insieme al Nucleo cinofilo della Direzione Regionale del Molise, alle squadre SAF (Speleo Alpino Fluviale) del comando di Isernia e al personale del Nucleo Elicotteri di Pescara, hanno simulato una battuta di ricerca e recupero di una persona dispersa in zona impervia. Particolare soddisfazione è stata espressa dalla direttrice del corso, che ha preso parte in prima persona all'esercitazione curandone il coordinamento.

La Croce Rossa Italiana, in partnership con la Federazione Internazionale di Croce Rossa e Mezzaluna Rossa e in collaborazione con ENEA, organizza la prima edizione di “International Summer School ItRC: Basic Course – Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Preparedness”, che si terrà a Roma dal 23 al 27 giugno 2015.
Il Corso sarà inaugurato martedì 23 giugno presso la Sala del Consiglio del Comitato Centrale CRI, alla presenza del Presidente Nazionale della Croce Rossa Italiana, Francesco Rocca,  del Prefetto del Ministero dell’Interno Carlo Boffi e della Presidente della Summer School e Vice Presidente CRI, Maria Teresa Letta.

International training course on seismology, seismic data analysis, hazard assessment and risk mitigation

The GFZ carries out annual training courses on 'Seismology and Seismic Hazard Assessment'. These 4-weeks courses are part of the educational and training program of UNESCO and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, in the field of geosciences and disaster mitigation. They are a major German contribution to the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction ISDR. The courses provide theoretical fundamentals and practical training in applied seismology, microzonation, seismic hazard assessment and risk estimation, especially for geoscientists and engineers from developing countries.
