High Level Panel at Water Forum calls for “Six Urgent Imperatives”

The 5th World Water Forum took place in Istanbul, Turkey from 16 to 22 March and proposed, inter alia, an action plan to reduce water related disaster risks. “Water is life but the excess or absence of water is also a threat to life, warned Han Seung-soo, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. Presented by 21 experts from the World Water Council, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), the Japan Water Forum and the Korea Water Forum, the plan highlights six urgent imperatives as concrete steps to reduce water-related disaster risks:

1. Galvanize and mobilize before disaster strikes;

2. Prioritize systems to forecast, inform, alert and evacuate;

3. Incorporate disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation as integral to

development planning;

4. Improve disaster response;

5. Provide safe water and toilets quickly when disaster/conflict strikes; and

6. Implement special crosscutting initiatives, for instance, establishing a Large Delta

States Network.

 

Among participants of the high level panel session were the Crown Prince of Japan; The Prince of Orange, Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands; Han Seung-soo, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea; and UN Assistant Secretary-General, Margareta Wahlstrom. UNISDR will now coordinate follow up of the action plan with related institutions and experts closely linked with the UNISDR system.

Ad oggi, centinaia le città del mondo hanno già aderito ad Earth Hour 2009, tra le quali: Sidney, Melbourne, Honk Hong, Città del Messico, Manila, New York, Mosca, Singapore, San Francisco, Istanbul, Londra, Las Vegas, ecc.
Nel 2009, Earth Hour si pone un obiettivo ancora più ambizioso: attivare un miliardo di persone e coinvolgere mille città nel mondo. Per raggiungere questo importante traguardo, è fondamentale che i cittadini e le istituzioni di tutto il mondo si sentano parte della soluzione e diano stimolo ai leader della Terra affinché agiscano a favore di una riduzione immediata dei gas serra, attraverso l’adozione di un accordo globale sul clima in occasione dei negoziati di Copenaghen ‘09.

17° GIORNATA FAI DI PRIMAVERA

Il 28 e 29 marzo 2009, il FAI organizza la "17ª Giornata FAI di Primavera", con il coinvolgimento di 210 località italiane e 580 beni (monumenti, piazze, palazzi, chiese, ...), la maggior parte dei quali normalmente chiusi al pubblico. L'evento è organizzato per valorizzare e far conoscere ai cittadini il patrimonio artistico e culturale del nostro Paese, con la guida di oltre 10.000 "apprendisti ciceroni", giovani studenti che illustreranno gli aspetti storico-artistici dei beni.

At the Climate Change Conference in Poznań, Poland early this month, disaster issues were highlighted at a special plenary workshop on Risk Management and Insurance. Following an invited UNISDR briefing, many states reiterated that disaster risk reduction and the use of the Hyogo Framework were important elements of adaptation to climate change. This was accompanied by strong advocacy efforts from OCHA and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, reflecting a newly galvanized humanitarian sector focus on disaster prevention - which is providing opportunities for stronger engagement in ISDR System partnerships. Climate risk insurance and risk transfer attracted strong state party interest but are nonetheless the subject of widely divergent views on the kinds of benefits that would result.
