2018 Understanding Risk Forum (UR2018)

ORGANIZZATORE: GLOBAL FACILITY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION AND RECOVERY, THE (GFDRR)

The Understanding Risk (UR) Community is the pre-eminent platform for collaborating and sharing knowledge in the field of disaster risk assessment and risk communication. Created in 2010 by the World Bank and other partners, the UR Community convenes every two years at the global UR Forum to showcase the latest innovations and build new partnerships to foster advances in the field. Previous events have been held in Washington D.C., Cape Town, London and Venice.

UR2018
From May 14-18, 2018, nearly 1,000 attendees will convene in Mexico City for the fifth global Understanding Risk Forum. Given recent world events in the natural hazard sphere, this is clearly a fitting opportunity to bring together different actors in this field to help stimulate innovation and share knowledge to support better disaster risk preparedness and mitigation. UR events attract the world’s leading experts and practitioners in risk assessment and risk communication from a wide range of sectors representing government, insurance, information technology, entrepreneurs, NGOs, academia, multilateral and other institutions. This event promises to be the most innovative and exciting forum yet, exploring the future of disaster risk and its evolving nature, showcasing cutting-edge technologies that are improving the field.

Format
The Forum will be structured similarly to past Global Forums: the three days will consist of keynote speakers, technical sessions, and opening and closing ceremonies, along with cultural entertainment and ample opportunity to connect with other participants. The other two days provide a place for members of the UR Community to hold meetings or trainings to advance the field of disaster risk identification.

Become an integral part of UR2018
The UR organizing team is accepting proposals for both technical sessions and side events. Technical sessions are 90 minute sessions in the main conference (Wednesday, May 16 – Friday, May 18).

Unlike technical sessions which have a standardized time limit, side events allow for much more flexibility in terms of time, content and format. These sessions can be, but are not limited to, meetings, training sessions or workshops, initiative launches, stakeholder and other community of practice meetings. Please note, side events will be primarily organized by the person/people interested in holding a side event.

The deadline to apply for both calls is Friday, October 13th.
