Disaster Management Coordinator

The Disaster Management Coordinator will be the operational and technical backstop for World Relief and its partners’ Disaster Response and Disaster Risk Reduction Programming.


Responsibilities:

Disaster Response (30-40%)
• Provide operational support to ongoing Disaster Responses among World Relief and its partners
• Participate in Integral Alliance Operational Coordination
• Participate in networking events In Washington DC and with donors/churches as needed
• Develop a Disaster Response methodology in line with the World Relief Integral Mission Framework and Country Office needs

Disaster Risk Reduction (30-50%)
• Strengthen the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programming for World Relief’s 15 country offices and partners through dissemination of strategies and evaluation of opportunities.
• Train Country Offices in Vulnerability Assessments, Community Preparedness and other Community-Based Disaster Response tools and programming.
• Support staff to develop, pilot, and share learning on CBDRR and preparedness innovations.
• Design strategies, partnerships and interventions to guarantee the programs are church- and community-focused and all programs and partners are accountable to beneficiaries.
• Introduce or develop training curriculum and tools appropriate for World Relief.
• Assist Country Offices in compliance with Home Office Policy, Integral Alliance Quality Standards and the Humanitarian Code of Conduct.
• Assist in bringing coherence between World Relief’s Integral Mission Framework and its Disaster Management, linking initial-onset Disaster Response with longer-term development programming.
• Liaise with relevant technical staff of World Relief and its partners to support integration and maximum complementarity between Disaster Response and Disaster Risk Reduction with Integral Mission Framework.

Project Cycle Management (including administration) (20-50%)
• Promote good knowledge management, documentation and learning.
• Research new grant opportunities and facilitate new grant acquisition.
• Assist with proposal development; write and edit proposals and/or concept notes.
• Track reporting, spending, and fulfillment of contracts to ensure compliance.
• Assist country offices in compliance with Home Office policies and procedures in Human Resources, payroll, finance, etc.
• Organize and maintain all files related to the region, including reports, Sharepoint/ERP entries, schedules, etc.
• Provide appropriate administrative support to the field sites in their programming, procurement, administration, finance, marketing and logistics.

Knowledge, Skills and abilities:

The preferred candidate is able to self-manage his/her job responsibilities and improve World Relief’s best practices. The candidate will have all or most of the qualifications below:
• Educational background or experience within Humanitarian Disaster Response and Disaster Risk Reduction
• Undergraduate degree with international, development, management, or a related focus; graduate degree preferred
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Strong analytical, assessment, and project-planning skills
• Proficient with technology; computers, skype, MS office; etc.
• Self-motivated; capable of multi-tasking and troubleshooting within time constraints
• Strong work ethic and ability to produce results
• Commitment to serving international program needs as expressed from the field; ability to respond professionally and effectively to multiple and often competing demands
• Flexible team player
• Fluent written and spoken English; other languages a plus
• 3-5 years of overseas experience required in a developing country and preferably in a Humanitarian Response capacity

• Ability to work long or irregular hours during emergency-phase activities
• International travel in underdeveloped countries or regions (some impacted by disasters) that have highly-limited infrastructure and facilities, requiring work and travel in conditions of physical and sanitary hardship
• Able to deploy on short notice as needed
• Travel up to 35% of the time
