The PhD in Territory, Risk and Public Policies is an advanced training program geared towards developing skills of scientific research and higher professional qualifications in the sciences of risk. The program is designed for an audience with higher education with diverse backgrounds, ranging from social sciences to natural and exact sciences and technologies, allowing an integrated view, the quantification of resilience and strength of communities and individuals based on the joint consideration of many uncertainties, and the selection of relevant variables for the assessment and perception of risk in human communities.

The PhD in Territory, Risk and Public Policy is an inter-university program offered jointly by the Centre for Social Studies (CES) and the Interdisciplinary Research Institute (III) from the University of Coimbra, the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) and the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG) from the University of Lisbon and the University of Aveiro.

Objectives

To provide a strong scientific education in the different fields related to the issue of risk, within the scope of process modelling, land management and individuals and communities’ mobilization, as well of the design and implementation of public policies. This programme aims at the definition of basis and instruments of support to risk management policies, comprising, besides the structural measures and emergency systems, actions for the reduction of social vulnerability and regulatory instruments, considering the national legal and strategic framework, as well as European directives, and strategies and regulations from International Organizations. This programme will last 4 years.

Curricular structure

The Doctoral Programme “Territory, Risk and Public Policies” is organized in two modules: regular and research project.

The regular module corresponds to the academic component during the first year of the study cycle (60 ECTS), which is complemented by a research module of thesis elaboration during the programme’s final three years (180 ECTS).

The research module is applicable to all the candidates who integrate national or foreign research programmes or hold national or foreign doctoral grants, or also to those who, having completed a Master’s degree in the relevant scientific field in any of the involved Universities, show exceptional research skills. At the research module, in the first year of the study cycle, students must chose three curricular units, belonging to the educational set, and attend to the Research Seminar, thus obtaining 30 credit units. During the first year, students will initiate the projects leading to the thesis elaboration, which will be developed during the following three years (210 ECTS).

Target Audience
 





  • Holders of Master’s Degree or legal equivalent;



  • Assistant professors who have been approved in pedagogical aptitude and scientific ability tests;



  • Holders of an Undergraduate Degree, with especially relevant academic or scientific curricula, acknowledged as possessing the necessary competences to be accepted to this study cycle by the III-UC's Scientific Board;



  • Holders of academic, scientific or professional curricula, acknowledged as possessing the necessary competences to be accepted to this study cycle by the III-UC's Scientific Board.
