Short course on tropical weather: Going deep into the tropics and oceans

Ente Organizzatore: American Meteorological Society (AMS) - Tipologia: corso di formazione - luogo: Miami (Florida-USA) - data: 23 giugno 2010

This full day course is sponsored by Energizer and will precede the 38th Annual AMS Conference on Broadcast Meteorology 24–27 June 2010. Preliminary conference programs, registration, hotel, and general information will be posted on the AMS Web site.

Tropical weather, ocean currents and water temperatures can affect the weather coast-to-coast and throughout the heartland of the U.S. For the first time a panel of nationally known tropical experts is being assembled for an AMS Short Course. This one-day course features some of the latest research, equipment, policies and forecast techniques. There will be an extensive hands-on exercise designed to test your forecasting skill which includes all the information necessary to track a storm and better develop your own tropical forecasts in the future. This is also an opportunity to speak personally with leading experts from the National Hurricane Center and the AOML research facility. These will be valuable contacts for your future use. The goal of this course is to provide a solid understanding of what is currently happening in the tropics and the forecast tools at your disposal. So, how does this affect your community? Whether you live on the Coast or in Middle America, tropical systems lead the news everywhere. This is an opportunity to fine tune your skills whether a novice or already an old pro. The course is designed for all levels of expertise.  The outline includes a series of presentations, a hands-on forecasting exercise and Q & A with the experts. There will be 2 coffee breaks and a casual lunch. Handouts are provided.

Some of the Topics Covered Include:

• Tropical Cyclone Forecast Process: How NHC Uses Track and Intensity Guidance
• Understanding Strengths and Limitations of Tropical Cyclone Models
• Strengths and Limitations of Tropical Cyclone Observations
• HFIP and JHT
• Products to Handle Uncertainties in Wind and Surge

In addition there will be several more tropical presentations in the annual Broadcast Meteorology Conference 24–27 June 2010 at the same location. These include GOESS R and NPOESS Satellites, Global Warming and Hurricanes, plus a tour of the NHC and AOML facilities.
